we proudly established the Bolin Family Stepping Stone Award, an annual honor presented to an individual making a meaningful impact in the lives of students with special needs through outstanding service in Volusia County.
This award was named in recognition of the Bolin Family, whose philanthropy, time, and unwavering compassion have been devoted to supporting families of children with special needs. Their commitment and generosity have created opportunities, strengthened our community, and left a lasting legacy of care and inclusion.
Through this award, we celebrate both the individuals who continue this important work and the enduring impact the Bolin Family has made—and continues to make—within our community.
If you know of an individual that meets this description-- please nominate them by emailing their name and a description of their work to upwardtrendfoundation@gmail.com

The 2026 Bolin Family Award is presented to Veronica Patterson in recognition of her dedicated advocacy within the disability community. Inspired by her daughter McKenna’s words, “Mom, you are responsible for making the world better for disabilities,” Veronica expanded her work with the Upward Trend Foundation into broader systemic impact. She developed a comprehensive community-based living facility concept that led to engagement with state leaders, and in 2025 completed the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council’s Partner in Policymaking program. Through state-level legislative advocacy, board service, fundraising efforts, and direct support to families, Veronica consistently promotes the message that there is ability in every disability.

Tracey Bolin embodies the heart of the Bolin Family Stepping Stone Award. As a dedicated member of the Upward Trend Foundation Board, a former special education teacher, and a parent of children with special needs, Tracey brings both professional expertise and deep personal understanding to everything she does.
Her compassion, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to families shine through in her service to our community. Tracey has spent her life lifting others, creating pathways of support, and ensuring that children with special needs are seen, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential. She is a true example of leadership rooted in empathy, service, and love.
